20 August 2014 by Henk Bekker in California, Monterey, Pebble Beach, USA

The 2014 Gooding & Co Pebble Beach classic car auction grossed $106 million with 30 cars exceeding the $1 million mark. The most-expensive car was a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider that realized $15,180,000 – a new model record. A 1955 Aston Martin DB3S achieved $5.5 million – a new high for the marque. A 1966 Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale Tre Posti had a highest bid of $22 million but failed to clear the reserve. Similarly a new record for a McLaren was missed despite an opening bid higher than the current marque record.

The 2014 Gooding & Company Pebble Beach classic car sale was held over two days on August 16 and 17 in conjunction with the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This annual flagship auction grossed $106 million with 107 of 121 lots selling – a sell-through rate of 88% with an average price of $990,699 per car. 30 cars achieved a million dollars each.

Gooding had an excellent of Saturday when 59 of 64 cars were sold and $60.4 million was grossed. A new Aston Martin marque record was set while the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider achieved $15,180,000 – a new model record and the highest result at the 2014 Pebble Beach sale.

However, on Sunday, several high profile lots failed to clear the reserves despite achieving high bids. The most important was a 1966 Ferrari 365 P Berlinette Special “Tre Posti” (“Three Seats”) that achieved a bid of $22 million – the third highest of any car during the Monterey classic car week – but failed to clear the margin.

The previous day, the $9.5 million opening bid for a 1995 McLaren F1 (estimate $12 – 14 million) would have set a new marque record but the reserve was not met.

Most-Expensive Cars at the Pebble Beach 2014 Auction

Gooding sold 30 cars at the 2014 Pebble Beach classic car auction for over a million dollars each. Of these, “only” 9 were Ferraris – at RM Auctions, 15 out of 35 were Ferraris and at Bonhams 12 out of 19. Four further Ferraris received bids over a million dollar but failed to sell.

A 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider achieved $15,180,000 as the top result at the 2014 Gooding Pebble Beach sale. This was the third highest result achieved at any auction during the 2014 Monterey classic car week.

The car is one of only 37 short-wheel based California Spiders featuring the sought-after covered headlights. The $15 million achieved set a new record for the model.

1959 Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet – $5,610,000

The second highest result was $5,610,000 for a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet with coachwork by Pinin Farina. This car was the last of only 40 ever produced. The car has been well maintained but never received a full restoration.

1955 Aston Martin DB3S – $5,500,000

1955 Aston Martin DB3S - $5,500,000

Gooding set a new nominal marque record when a 1955 Aston Martin DB3S achieved $5,500,000 at the 2014 Pebble Beach sale. It was the most-expensive British car by far sold during the Monterey classic car weak.

Aston Martin produced only 20 DB3S cars for customers and a further 16 for the works team. This car is considered the most authentic and best-preserved example of the 16 cars that survived.

At adjusted prices, the $3.4 million paid for a 1957 Aston Martin DBR2 at Christie’s in 1985 is $7.5 million at current values.

1956 Maserati 250F – $4,620,000

1956 Maserati 250F - $4,620,000

The 1956 Maserati 250F that sold for a model-record $4,620,000 at the Pebble Beach auction was driven to victory at the Italian Grand Prix in 1956 by Sterling Moss, who was present at the auction.

The Maserati is one of only two built and intended as factory-raced cars. However, the Italian GP was the only race this car was ever entered into, apart from historical races since 1999.

A few other interesting cars from the Gooding & C0 Pebble Beach Sale:

1927 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix, sold for $2,970,000
1927 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix © Gooding & Co
  • A 1927 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix, sold for $2,970,000, was owned and raced by Hellé Nice to amongst others a third place at the 1930 Bugatti Grand Prix at Le Mans.
  • A 1958 BMW 507 sold for $1,925,000 – the third 507 selling for near $2 million thus far this year.
  • A 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster sold for $1,705,000 and a 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster sold for $1,512,500. However, the two Gullwings on offer failed to clear the (high) reserve margins.
  • A 1967 Toyota 2000 GT sold for $1,155,000 – RM Auctions sold a similar car for over a million dollar too.
  • A 1988 Porsche 959 KOMFORT sold for $1,485,000 – well over the estimate of $900,000 to $1,100,000. Expect more 959s to rush to market in 2015.
