Florida Spring 2024 Auctions at Amelia Island and Miami
The traditional early March classic car auctions at Amelia Island, Florida, USA, were held on 29 February, 1 and 2 March 2024 by Bonhams, Broad Arrow, and Gooding. Outstanding Results at Florida Spring 2024 Classic Car Auctions
The most expensive car sold at the Florida Spring 2024 classic car auctions was the rare 1903 Mercedes-Simplex 60 HP ‘Roi des Belges’ which achieved $12,105,000 at the Gooding Amelia Island 2024 classic car auction. This was the highest price ever paid for a car manufactured before 1930 and of course also the most expensive antique or vintage car ever. It is also the first car older than a century, or 1930 for that matter, to sell for over $10 million at public auction.
This Mercedes 60 HP was ordered new by British publishing tycoon Alfred Harmsworth, Viscount Northcliffe, and remained in family ownership for 121 years. It was displayed at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, England for over six decades. The Mercedes remains in highly original condition, with its Rothschild bodywork still retaining much of its original leather upholstery.
The top result at the Broad Arrow Amelia Island 2024 classic car auction, and the second highest result at the Florida Spring 02024 auctions, was $4,405,000 paid for a 1967 Ford GT40. This car was one of only 31 GT40 road cars produced and was one of 20 used for press and other promotions by Ford.
The most expensive car sold at the RM Sotheby’s Miami 2024 classic car auction was a 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Coupe by Vignale, which achieved $4,295,000, shattering the previous world record for the model by $995,000. This 250 Europa was the first of only 22 produced, one of only two fitted with a 3-liter Clombo V-12, and one of only three fitted with the exquisite coupe bodywork designed by Vignale’s Giovanni Michelotti.
A 2022 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, with only 393 miles on the clock, sold for a new Pur Sport model record $4,047,500 at Broad Arrows. It is one of 60 Chiron Pur Sport cars produced and was fitted with almost $400,000 in options. The 2010 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport ‘Sang Bleu’ also set a new model record.
The 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series I Spider at Gooding was sold post-hammer but during the auction for just below $4 million soon after. In the same sale, a green 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider sold for well above the presale estimate of $2,500,000 – $3,000,000 to set a new model record at $3,635,000.
A perfectly-restored 1930 Duesenberg Model J ‘Disappearing Top’ Convertible Coupe by Murphy sold for $3,855,000, as the second highest result at the RM Sotheby’s Miami 2024 sale. This was over a million more than Gooding achieved on a similar model at Amelia Island 2024. Only 25 ‘Disappearing Top’ convertible coupes were ever built by Murphy for the Model J.
