A 1956/1980s Jaguar D-Type sold for $1,100,000 to top the results at the Bonhams Goodwood Revival sale 2021 while a 1993 Jaguar XJ220 achieved a model record $635,000.
The top result at the Bonhams Goodwood Revival classic car auction was £799,000 paid for a Jaguar D-Type that combined original and reproduction parts for a car close enough to original specification to participate in top historical races. A Don Law Racing prepared 1993 Jaguar XJ220 sold for a new world auction model record £460,000. Two remarkable automobilia results were £197,800 paid for UK vehicle registration number 8X and £25,250 paid for the original 1970 UK tax disc issued to the original ‘Goldfinger’ Aston Martin DB5, used by Pinewood Studios in the James Bond film.
Bonhams Goodwood Revival Classic Car Auction 2021
The Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale was a regular live classic car auction held on Saturday 18 September 2021 in Chichester, Goodwood, in southern England.
Bonhams earned just shy of £11 million in the car and automobilia auction. The sell-through rate for all lots were 73%.

Top Car Results at the Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale
The top result at the Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale 2021 was £799,000 ($1,102,611) paid for a 1956/1980s D-Type Sports-Racing Two-Seater, owned by Goodwood Revival racer Valentine Lindsay. The somewhat low result for a D-Type reflects that the car was not in concourse condition, while the 1956/1980s explains that the car is not a fully original example. This Jaguar is a hotchpot of original and reproduction parts and combined elements from various cars. The car conforms sufficiently to original specification that it is allowed to race in FIA historic events, where it certainly is easier to drive with panache than the far more expensive original D-Types.
The collection of the late businessman Stan West ‘Best of British’ marques represented by 24 motor cars spanning more than 80 years, achieved a ‘white glove’ sale, with 100 percent sold. Leading the collection was a 1955 Bentley R-Type Continental Sports Saloon, which made £642,200 and was the second most valuable lot of the day.
It was followed by two classic Bentleys: a 1931 Bentley 4/8-Litre Two-Seater, which sold well above its pre-sale estimate, achieving £603,000, and a 1930 Bentley 6 ½ Liter Le Mans Team Car Replica that achieved £501,400, well below estimate.
Two outstanding results were:
- The 1993 Jaguar XJ220, with just over 400 miles covered since new, setting a new auction world record for the model, selling for £460,000. This XJ220 prepared by Don Law Racing has no racing history: supplied new to Germany, it has only covered 385 miles. One of the XJ220 that raced at Le Mans is on sale at the RM Sotheby’s Guikas auction in November 2021 in the south of France.
- A one owner from new 1971 Iso Grifo 7.4-litre Series II Coupé sold for £345,000, considerably above its pre-sale top estimate of £250,000 – a fantastic result for this time warp machine that had been put away in its owner’s garage in 1974 where it had remained until being brought to Goodwood.
The 1920s racing Lagondas mostly failed to sell.
Top Automoblia Results at Bonhams Goodwood Revival 2021
Preceding the motor cars sale was the ever-popular automobilia auction led by the sale of UK vehicle registration number ‘8 X’, which sold for £197,800, exceeding its pre-sale top estimate of £120,000.
With the imminent release of the new James Bond film No Time to Die, 007-fever had clearly swept the Bonhams sale room when a 1970 UK tax disc issued to the original ‘Goldfinger’ Aston Martin DB5, used by Pinewood Studios in the James Bond film, sold for a staggering £25,250, more than 10 times its pre-sale estimate, following a two-way bidding war in the Bonhams saleroom at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.
Bonhams Motor Car department will be heading to the USA for its next sale, the debut Newport Concours Auction taking place on October 1 in Rhode Island, followed by The Zoute Sale a week later (10 October) in Knokke-Heist, Belgium.
