Mecum achieved million-dollar results on over a dozen cars in the Kissimmee 2022 collector car auction. The most expensive Mustang ever — the 1965 Shelby GT350R Prototype “The Flying Mustang” — was the top result at $3,750,000 — slightly less than it achieved in 2020. The second-highest price paid in the sale was $3,300,000 for a 2020 McLaren Speedtail. Mecum also achieved very strong results on a Ferrari F40 and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. Two sensational results more than doubling presale estimates were for the 1951 Hirohata Mercury Custom and a 1936 White Model 706 Glacier National Park Tour Bus.

Mecum Kissimmee Sale 2022

Mecum’s Kissimmee 2022 collector car auction is scheduled to run from 6 to 16 January 2022 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, USA. Around 3,500 cars and a thousand items of art and memorabilia will be on sale.

In 2022, Mecum earned a single-event sales record of $217 million in sales over 11 days. This figure included the $72 million Mecum earned on the final Saturday — a single-day record for the company. Vehicle-only earnings were $213 million with 2,954 vehicles sold — a sell-through rate of 90%.

In 2021, Mecum sold just over 2,000 cars in its Kissimmee sale to earn $122.8 million — the highest single-auction total ever achieved in Mecum’s 34-year history. It was a remarkable single-auction total and a result rarely seen outside the annual Monterey and Scottsdale auctions. In 2020, Mecum earned $105.1 million with 2,140 vehicles changing hands throughout the 11-day auction.

The Flying Mustang Sold at Mecum Kissimmee 2022

The most expensive Mustang in the world, the 1965 Shelby GT350R Prototype, chassis 5R002, “Flying Mustang”, achieved $3,750,000 as the top result at the Mecum Kissimmee 2022 collector car auction. The most expensive car thus far in 2022. It was sold only 18 months ago for $3,850,000 at the Mecum Indianapolis 2020 collector car auction when it took the title as the most expensive Mustang ever. The 2022 lower price is still $10,000 more than the third-highest Mustang result ever — the 3,740,000 paid for the Steve McQueen “Bullitt” 1968 Ford Mustang GT at Mecum Kissimmee 2020.

The first competition Shelby Mustang, the first to be raced, and the first to win, 5R002 simultaneously served as Shelby American’s factory engineering mule, a rolling test bed for ideas and components, including those that would constitute both the second team car (5R001) and all 34 customer R-models. Ken Miles, Bob Bondurant, Chuck Cantwell, Peter Brock, Jerry Titus, and several other world-class drivers drove this car extensively in testing and development. In fact, Titus would not have earned the 1965 B-Production SCCA National Championship title had it not been for his early victories throughout the year in 5R002.

(The car was initially listed as sold for $4,070,000 but once final costs were calculated, the result was published as sold for $3,750,000 all-in.)

Top Modern Supercar Results at Mecum Kissimmee 2022

Several modern supercars achieved results over a million dollars at the Mecum Kissimmee 2022 collector car auction in Florida:

The 2020 McLaren Speedtail sold for $3,300,000 — although just below estimate, this was still the highest price ever paid for this model at public auctions. Two were sold in 2021 for slightly less.

1992 Ferrari F40

The 1992 Ferrari F40 achieved $2,750,000 — also just below estimate but still one of the highest prices ever paid for a standard F40. This Ferrari was the 19th of 22 produced in the final year of production and had a relatively low 14,053 km (8,732 miles) on the clock. The 2021 Ferrari SF90 Stradale just failed to reach a million dollar.

The 2016 Pagani Huayra sold for $2,117,500 — just above estimate and possibly a model record for a standard Huayra at public auction.

The 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo (Type 964) just missed the estimate but still sold for a strong $1,430,000 helped by its appearance in the movie “Bad Boys”.

Three 2017-2019 Ford GTs were sold in the Mecum sale. The top result was $1,320,000 paid for a 2018 Ford GT ’67 Heritage Edition.

Top Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Results at the Mecum Kissimmee 2022 Auction

Mecum achieved two very strong results on Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs that are certainly going to catch the attention of owners of similar models who are likely to test the market.

The 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster sold for $1,375,000 — a very strong result despite the slightly optimistic estimate.

However, the sensational $2,640,000 result for the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing was unexpected. Although thoroughly restored by specialists, the presale estimate of $1,750,000 to $2,000,000 seemed optimistic given recent auction results. Only a handful of Gullwings have ever sold for over $2 million and none since 2014.

These strong results are certain to draw more cars to auction. The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy Gullwing on offer at RM Sotheby’s Arizona 2022 is likely to be THE Gullwing of the year — presale estimate is $7,000,000 – $9,000,000!

Top American Classic Sold at Mecum Kissimmee 2022

In addition to the Flying Mustang and the Ford GTs, several further American classics achieved strong results at Mecum Kissimmee 2022.

The 1951 Hirohata Mercury Custom sold for a sensational $2,145,000 — double presale estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,250,000. It is one of the most famous and best-documented American custom cars from the classic postwar era. It is perfectly restored and took Best in Class at Pebble Beach.

No less spectacular was the $1,430,000 paid for the 1936 White Model 706 Glacier National Park Tour Bus — triple estimate and surely one of the most expensive buses ever.

The highest result on Friday was $1,430,000 paid for a 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster while a 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra Dragonsnake Factory Stage III sold for $1,375,000. Both results were below the somewhat optimistic pre-sale estimates.

The top unsuccessful highest bids achieved at Mecum Kissimmee collector car auction 2022 were:

1963Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Gulf OneHB 2,400,0003,000,000 – 3,500,000
1970Plymouth Hemi Cuda ConvertibleHB 2,100,0002,400,000 – 2,700,000
1966Chevrolet Corvette Pilot Line Development L88HB 1,100,000Call for Estimate
2021Iso Rivolta GT ZagatoHB 700,000Call for Estimate

Most of the top cars on offer at Mecum Kissimmee 2022 sold but bidding for two of the top Corvettes and the Plymouth Hemi Cuda stopped short of reserve.

Interest in the 2021 Iso Rivolta GT Zagato seemed limited. It is one of only 19 produced and the first and likely only one imported and registered in the US. This car is based on the Corvette Z06 underpinnings with a Corvette supercharged V-8 engine but has no body panels in common with the Chevrolet. No estimate has been released but it was advertised for $1.35 million earlier in 2021 (and clearly failed to sell).
