The top results at the RM Sotheby’s New York 2023 sale were for a 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic by Ghia, a 2015 McLaren P1, and a 2015 Porsche 918 Spider. A new world record $1,655,000 was paid for a 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition by Bertone, which featured in The Wolf of Wall Street film.

RM Sotheby’s New York Sale (December 2023)

RM Sotheby’s New York auction during the Sotheby’s Luxury Week on 8 December 2023 earned $13,610,000 in total sales with a sell-through rate of 78%. Only 18 cars were on offer. Three of the top results at the RM Sotheby’s New York 2023 classic car sale achieved new world model record prices:

The 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition by Bertone, showcased as the sole drivable model featured in Scorsese’s classic The Wolf of Wall Street film, sold for $1,655,000, breaking the previous record for the model by $880,000 and becoming the second most expensive Countach ever. The price was clearly driven by the movie link. In total, 657 of the 25th Anniversary Edition cars were produced — more than of any other version of the Countach.

Emerging from 22 years of fastidious single-owner care, the 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic by Ghia is the most stunningly presented example of the fourteen 8V Supersonics, and was minimally used by just four caretakers through the course of its 70-year life. Selling as the top lot of the night and breaking the previous record for the model, this 8V Supersonic went to its fifth owner for $2,425,000. The previous record was $2,260,000 set at RM Sotheby’s Monterey 2023.

The only coupe of seven Bertone-bodied Aston Martins built and boasting a meticulous concours restoration by marque specialist Kevin Kay, the 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Coupe brought in another record-breaking result, selling for $1,105,000. (Drophead coupes and spiders have sold for more.) This Aston Martin was First in Class at the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and is invited to the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

RM Sotheby’s also had strong results with three modern supercars at the New York 2023 sale:

  • A 2015 McLaren P1 sold for $2,095,000 — a result at the higher end of results for the model, which again frequently achieves $2 million after mostly failing to reach that mark between 2017 and 2022. However, this very car achieved nearly $2.4 million at Gooding Amelia Island 2017.
  • A 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder sold for $1,985,000 — it would have been a model record if the record wasn’t doubled a week earlier at the RM Sotheby’s Texas 2023 sale.
  • 2006 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 sold for $1,490,000 — a solid result for an early example (13th of 252 produced) and second US-specification model.
