California Spiders are rare cars. Only around 100 Ferrari 250 GT California Spiders were built, of which approximately 56 were short-wheelbase and 50 long-wheelbase versions. The SWB versions are usually the more expensive but the most desirable are the very rare competition models.

The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider Competizione, chassis 2383GT, (Estimate: In Excess of $20,000,000) is by far the most expensive car on offer at any of the 2025 Monterey Week classic car auctions. If it sells, it is likely to set the new model record and become only the 20th car to sell for over $20 million at public auction.

Of the 56 California Spider SWB cars, Ferrari built only three with lightweight aluminum coachwork, of which chassis 2383GT is one of only two completed to full competition specification.

Equipped by Carrozzeria Scaglietti with lightweight aluminum bodywork, covered headlamps, and a rare, removable aluminum hardtop, 2383 GT was fitted with a competition-style, quick-release external fuel filler.

2383 GT was delivered new to gentleman racer Ernst Lautenschlager of Stuttgart, Germany, who extensively campaigned his only Ferrari in German and Austrian hill climbs and circuit races. The California Spider remained in Germany and Switzerland with a handful of owners before coming to the US in 1968.

The current owner purchased this remarkable Competition California Spider in 1999, and subsequently commissioned Italian master Dino Cognolato with a meticulous restoration. The car was refinished in its current livery of sleek Grigio Fumo (Smoke Gray).

In the last 25 years, this California Spider has been a successful participant in virtually every top-tier event, from the Le Mans Classic to Salon Privé, the Concours of Elegance to Chantilly, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. However, it was never shown at Pebble Beach or Villa d’Este, nor offered publicly since the mid-1960s.

The 1957 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Prototipo, chassis 0769 GT, (Estimate: $7,500,000 – $9,000,000), was the original California Spider prototype.

Unique in every respect, it stands as the original vision that set the tone for all that would later follow. Built with a state-of-the-art tipo 128C Colombo V-12 engine, its Scaglietti bodywork features covered headlights, a bold hood scoop, full-width bumpers, and purposeful detailing throughout. Upon completion, it was photographed to launch the legendary model and was featured in factory promotional literature.

This California Spider was sold new through Luigi Chinetti Motors to amateur racer and regular Ferrari patron George Arents. More recently, 0769 GT underwent an award-winning restoration by renowned Ferrari specialist Rare Drive Inc., in which it was refinished in its striking original color scheme.

After this work was completed in 2016, 0769 GT garnered the highest honors at several concours, including First in Class at Pebble Beach, Mention of Honor at Villa d’Este, Best in Class at the Ferrari 70th Anniversary “Rosso 70” Concours in Maranello, and Best in Class at Amelia Island.

In contrast to these historically significant cars, the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, chassis 2277 GT, (Estimate: $8,000,000 – $10,000,000), is a more regular model and offered in its original color scheme of Nocciola over Tobacco.

The Ferrari was sold new to VIP Ferrari customer Dino Fabbri of Milan, co-founder of one of Italy’s leading publishers, Fratelli Fabbri Editori. Its second owner was Antonio Ciaccia, a.k.a. Little Tony, the famous Italian rock ‘n’ roll singer and actor. During the 1960s, the California Spider featured in several Italian films, including Riderà (Cuore matto) starring Little Tony, La più bella coppia del mondo, and Sissignore, where it famously raced a Lamborghini Miura P400.
