A 1979 Porsche 935 and a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder are the lead cars for the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 classic car auction.
The most-expensive car on offer at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 sale is the 1979 Porsche 935 (estimate $2,550,000 – $3,000,000) followed by the delivery mileage 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach (estimate $1,800,000 – $2,000,000). Half of the top ten cars on offer are Porsches with the German marque representing nearly a third of all cars on offer at the auction. Only nine cars have estimates exceeding a million dollar.
Gooding Amelia Island 2019 Auction
Gooding & Company scheduled its Amelia Island Auction on March 9, 2019, at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation, Amelia Island, Florida, USA.
In 2019, Gooding earned $22 million at Amelia Island selling 78 of 89 lots offered for a respectable sell-through rate of 88%. The average price was $282,666 per car with six cars sold for over a million dollar.
In 2018, Gooding earned $35.5 million with a high 94% sell through rate – 81 of 86 lots were sold but unfortunately, the unsold lots included the two most-expensive cars in the sale. The average price was $438,818.
In 2017, Gooding gained $30,568,700 with a sell through rate of 78% with 69 of 88 lots offered sold. The average price was $443,025. However, Gooding earned a record $60 million at Amelia Island in 2016, when the sell-through rate was 87% with an average price of $871,915 per car sold. The 2016 sale memorably included 14 Porsches from the Jerry Seinfeld Collection.

10 | 1964 | Shelby 289 Cobra | 800,000 – 900,000 |
Only nine of the cars on offer at the Gooding sale have estimates of a million dollar – far fewer than in recent years, including 2018 when Gooding sold 14 cars for more than a million dollar at Amelia Island. This reflects current uncertainty in the classic car market – while trading is very active at lower prices, bidding at the million-dollar-plus level has been more subdued at recent auctions.
Top Porsches at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 Sale
Five of the top ten cars on offer at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 classic car auction are Porsches – not a big surprise as Gooding traditionally does well with the German sports car marque in Florida.
The most-expensive car on offer at the Gooding auction is the 1979 Porsche 935, chassis 990 0027, estimate $2,550,000 – $3,000,000. This car is one of only seven built in 1979 and was originally owned and raced by Otis Chandler. The well-documented racing car is an unusually correct example – partly due to it being raced only once. It is still in its original blue Sunolco livery.
The second most-expensive car at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 sale is a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach, estimate $1,800,000 – $2,000,000 – and rather daringly, given recent 918 results, offered without reserve. The car is sold by Whatsapp co-founder Jan Koum and has only 40 miles on the clock. In addition to the low mileage, the Weissach package (around $84,000 new) and the Liquid Metal Chrome Blue paintwork are added attractions. Only seven 918 cars were finished with this paintwork, which is not surprising as it was a $64,000 option. The estimate is well above recent results but the car is a particularly good delivery mileage example.
The 1993 Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8, estimate $1,200,000 – $1,500,000, is another car from the Jan Koum Collection of limited edition Porsches. It is one of only 55 road-going versions built of the Porsche 964 RSR racing car. It has covered only 15,420 km and its only other owner was Shin Okamoto.
The 1987 Kremer Porsche 962C, estimate $1,000,000 – $1,250,000 was specially built by Kremer itself for the team’s efforts at the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it finished fourth overall. This 962C was raced again the following year at Le Mans where it finished eighth overall. The Porsche retains its iconic Leyton House livery but has been on static display for the past decade and will require some work before being able to race again.
The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight, estimate $1,000,000 – $1,200,000, is one of only 200 examples built and has had only four owners since new. Restored to show-quality condition under its current ownership, this Porsche is beautifully presented in its original white livery with green Carrera graphics and wheels.
Nearly a third of the 91 lots on offer at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 sale will be Porsches.
Other Million-Dollar Cars at Gooding Amelia Island 2019
The most-expensive non-Porsche on offer at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 sale is a 1930 Packard 734 Speedster Runabout, estimate $1,700,000 – $2,000,000. It is one of only 18 Speedsters known to have survived and features sporting boattail coachwork by Packard Custom Bodyworks. The Packard has not been displayed in the past decade but in 2006 took First in Class at Pebble Beach and in 2007 received the Breitling Award for Timeless Beauty at Amelia Island.
Only three Italian cars at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 sale are expected so achieve a million dollar and all three come with the same $1,300,000 to $1,600,000 pre-auction estimate:
- The 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS, chassis 06805, was the Brussels Show car and the fourth of only 200 built. It is presented in its original color scheme of red over black and retained its original engine.
- The 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso with coachwork by Scaglietti is one of 350 built. It is also red over black with its original engine.
- The 1955 Lancia B24S Spider America is one of 240 built and is offered fresh from a comprehensive restoration.
