The top result at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 classic car auction was $1,765,000 paid for a 1930 Packard 734 Speedster Runabout, estimate $1,700,000 – $2,000,000. It is one of only 18 Speedsters known to have survived and features sporting boattail coachwork by Packard Custom Bodyworks. The Packard has not been displayed in the past decade but in 2006 took First in Class at Pebble Beach and in 2007 received the Breitling Award for Timeless Beauty at Amelia Island.

This was the second auction in two days to be topped by an American classic from 1930 – the day before Bonhams top result was $1,187,500 for a  1930 Cadillac Series 452 V-16 Roadster.

The top Porsche result at the Gooding Amelia Island 2019 auction was $1,490,000 paid for a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach – one of the lowest results ever accepted for the model. This 918 was part of the Whatsapp founder Jan Koum’s Porsche collection and was offered without reserve. Despite having only 40 miles on the clock and featuring the $64,000 Liquid Metal Chrome Blue paintwork option, the car failed to outperform similar cars sold at recent auctions. A year ago, Gooding sold a non-Weissach 918 with 2,500 miles on the clock for slightly more. Although only 918 cars were ever made, the market currently suffers from an oversupply of low-mileage models.

The second most-expensive Porsche result was $1,132,500 paid for a 1993 Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8, estimate $1,200,000 – $1,500,000. This was another car from the Jan Koum Collection of limited edition Porsches. It is one of only 55 road-going versions built of the Porsche 964 RSR racing car. It has covered only 15,420 km and its only other owner was Shin Okamoto.

The 1987 Kremer Porsche 962C, estimate $1,000,000 – $1,250,000, sold for $1,022,500. This racing car was specially built by Kremer for the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it finished fourth overall. This 962C was raced again the following year at Le Mans where it finished eighth overall. The Kremer Porsche retains its iconic Leyton House livery but has been on static display for the past decade and will require some work before being able to race again.

1979 Porsche 935 (Estimate: $2,550,000 – $3,000,000)

The top bid of the auction was $2 million but was not accepted for the 1979 Porsche 935, chassis 990 0027, estimate $2,550,000 – $3,000,000. This car is one of only seven built in 1979 and was originally owned and raced by Otis Chandler. The well-documented racing car is an unusually correct example – partly due to it being raced only once. It is still in its original blue Sunolco livery.

A highest bid of $800,000 was also not accepted for a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight (Estimate: $1,000,000 – $1,200,000).

Top Ferraris at Gooding Amelia Island 2019 Sale

High-end Ferraris played a remarkable small role at the various Amelia Island 2019 classic car auctions. Gooding offered only two million-dollar Ferraris and both sold with results near lower estimate:

  • The 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS, chassis 06805, was the Brussels Show car and the fourth of only 200 built. It retained its original engine.
  • The 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso with coachwork by Scaglietti is one of 350 built. It is also red over black with its original engine.

Gooding’s next classic car auction is on 16 & 17 August 2019 at Pebble Beach.
