The most-expensive car sold at the Gooding Amelia Island 2020 sale was a 1914 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Torpédo Phaeton that achieved a magnificent $2,205,000 – the highest Rolls Royce result in years. The 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S sold for $1,435,000 while a 1976 Porsche 934 sold for a strong $1,380,000. The highest bid in the auction was $8 million but failed to buy the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider.

In 2020, Gooding earned $20,785,080 at the Amelia Island auction by selling 83 of 89 lots with a sell-through rate of 93%. The average price was $250,422.
In 2019, Gooding earned $22 million at Amelia Island selling 78 of 89 lots offered for a respectable sell-through rate of 88%.
In 2018, Gooding earned $35.5 million with a high 94% sell-through rate – 81 of 86 lots were sold. In 2017, Gooding gained $30.5 million with a sell-through rate of 78% with 69 of 88 lots offered sold. However, Gooding earned a record $60 million at Amelia Island in 2016, when the sell-through rate was 87%. The 2016 sale memorably included 14 Porsches from the Jerry Seinfeld Collection.

Million-Dollar-Plus Cars Sold at Gooding Amelia Island 2020
Gooding offered ten cars with upper estimates of a million dollars at the Amelia Island 2020 sale. Of these eight were sold with three achieving above a million dollars while a further three just fell short.
1914 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Torpédo Phaeton
The most-expensive car at Gooding Amelia Island 2020 was the Edwardian brass-era 1914 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Torpédo Phaeton, chassis 67RB, estimate: $2,700,000 – $3,500,000, which sold for $2,205,000. This was the highest Rolls-Royce result since the Rolls-Royce marque record was set by the 1912 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost „The Corgi“ with coachwork by Barker $7,343,000 (£4,705,500) at Bonhams Goodwood 2012.
Chassis 67RB was fitted with the most desirable specifications on the pre-World War I cars including the large, London to Edinburgh carburetor and 22” radiator, a high compression engine, stronger springs, C-type steering, nickel fittings, and a four-speed gearbox. This chassis was sent to Kellner Frères of Paris in May of 1914, where it received this sporting open torpédo coachwork before being delivered to its original owner, M.M. Castanheira, in Portugal.
Nearly 100 years later, after being discovered in Portugal, the restored Silver Ghost was shown at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where it received numerous awards including: Most Elegant Open Car, Revs Program at Stanford Award, First in Class, and was one of three Best of Show finalists.
1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S
The 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S sold for $1,435,000, as the second-highest result at Gooding Amelia Island 2020. This was also the highest price paid of the three Miuras that sold at auction for over a million dollars thus far this year.
The Miura, often seen as the first modern supercar, is a three-owner car with only 17,500 miles on the clock. It is a matching numbers example with its original interior.
1976 Porsche 934
The 1976 Porsche 934 sold for a model record $1,380,000 – by far the highest Porsche result in the auction that featured a large number of “cheaper” Porsches.
This 934 was the first of 31 examples built and originally delivered to Jürgen Kannacher. The Porsche was raced in European events by Kannacher GT Racing and Kremer Racing. Its in-period racing history includes a 3rd in class at the 1979 Le Mans 24 Hours race.

The 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL sold for $995,000. It was amongst the first 300 cars produced and custom-built for Princess Ashraf ol-Molouk Pahlavi of Iran. The car is unrestored and in a highly original condition. It has several special period rallying accessories fitted.
The 2019 McLaren Senna sold for $978,500. It is finished in MSO Defined Amethyst Black paint over a matching interior, features an additional 23 extra-cost options, which include the Full VCF (Visual Carbon Fiber) Gloss Body option to make this Senna one of the most expensive produced. It has only 88 miles on the clock. At least two Sennas have sold at public auction for over a million dollar but bidding for others had fallen short of reserve prices.
The 2017 Ford GT sold for near upper limit when it achieved $967,500. It was delivered in Ingot Silver with Dark Energy interior and has less than 15 miles on its odometer. Although at least ten Ford GT results over a million dollar were recorded thus far, prices have been mostly weaker at recent auctions.
The highest Ferrari result was $731,000 paid for a 2016 Ferrari F12tdf. However, the more spectacular result was $654,000 paid for a 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale Aperta (estimate: $425,000 – 500,00).

The 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider (Estimate: $9,000,000 – $11,000,000) that did not sell with a highest bid of $8 million.
Interest in the 2017 Lamborghini LP 770-4 Centenario Roadster, estimate: $2,000,000 – $2,500,000, seemed limited with bidding stopping at $1.6 million. Only 20 Centenario Roadsters were produced and this was the first one offered at public auction.
