The Ferrari F2002 in which Michael Schumacher clinched his fifth Formula 1 drivers championship in 2002 will be on sale at the RM Sotheby’s Abu Dhabi collector car sale during the final Formula 1 race of 2019 at the Yas Marina circuit. Schumacher drove the Ferrari to three F1 Grand Prix victories including Magny Cours where he secured his fifth championship with six races remaining. The presale estimate for the Schumacher Ferrari is $5,500,000 – $7,500,000.

Michael Schumacher’s 2002 Ferrari F2002, chassis #219, estimate $5,500,000 – $7,500,000, is the early lead car announced for the RM Sotheby’s Abu Dhabi collector car auctions.

Chassis no. 219, was a pivotal piece of machinery in the 2002 Formula 1 season, which quickly became a race for second place as the legendary Michael Schumacher finished 1st or 2nd in every race. Chassis no. 219 saw victory in the hands of Schumacher at three Grands Prix in 2002, including at Imola, Zeltweg, and Magny Cours, the last of which would secure Schumacher his 5th World Drivers’ Championship title; with six races remaining in the season it remains the shortest time in which a World Drivers’ Title has ever been clinched.

Ferrari also secured the Constructors’ Championship title in 2002, with this F2002 seeing further podium finishes including 2nd with Schumacher at Monaco, and 2nd at Spa and 4th at Hockenheim with teammate Rubens Barrichello, who finished as runner up in the Drivers’ Championship.

Chassis no. 219 was used as a test car in the remainder of the 2002 races and retired following the season. It has since been held in significant private collections across multiple continents.

The offering of the F2002 follows RM Sotheby’s successful sale of Michael Schumacher’s Grand Prix-winning Ferrari F2001 in Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction in November 2017 for $7,504,000 – a record for a modern Formula 1 racing car.

The most-expensive Formula 1 single-seater racing car was $29,650,000 paid for a 1954 Mercedes Benz W196R at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2013 sale. At the time the result nearly doubled the world record price for a car at auction. This Mercedes is still the fourth most-expensive car on record.

A further car announced for the RM Sotheby’s Abu Dhabi 2019 sale is a 1990 Ferrari F40, chassis no. ZFFGJ34B000084467, estimate $1,500,000 – $1,750,000. Four-time Formula 1 World Champion driver Sebastian Vettel signed the rear wing of the car at the announcement of the sale but there seems to be no other link to the German driver.

This desirable non-cat, non-adjust example has been beautifully restored and Red Book certified by Ferrari Classiche and shows a mere 1,140 km from new. A result within estimate will be above most recent auction results for this model.
