1932 Bugatti Type 55 Super Sport Roadster

The top car on offer at the Bonhams Amelia Island 2020 sale is a magnificent classic 1932 Bugatti Type 55 Super Sport Roadster (estimate $ 6,500,000 – 9,500,000). This genuine 1931 supercharged model with stunning Jean Bugatti-designed factory coachwork was sold new to the future Baron Rothschild.

The red and black Bugatti Type 55 is sold from the estate of Dean S. Edmonds Jr. who owned it for the past three decades. He bought this Bugatti for £440,000 in 1985 – at the time the most-expensive car ever sold in Britain. Under his ownership, the Bugatti was restored and won First in Class at Pebble Beach in 1993.

For the smaller budget, Bonhams also have lesser Bugattis on offer including a 1925 Bugatti Type 30 Sports Tourer, estimate $400,000 – 450,000, and a 1928 Bugatti Type 44 Cabriolet, estimate $330,000 -360,000.

Top Buggati Results at Public Auction

Bonhams has good form with classic Bugattis. At Amelia Island 2016, Bonhams achieved $9,735,000 for a 1937 Bugatti Type 57 SC Sports Tourer – one of the highest Bugatti results ever.

More recently, Bonhams sold a 1932 Bugatti Type 55, chassis 55221 – an ex-factory Le Mans participant and subsequently fitted with bodywork by Figoni, for €4,600,000 ($5,070,000) at the Paris 2020 Rétromobile week auction.

The Bugatti marque record (in nominal terms) is a 1932 Bugatti Type 55 Roadster sold for $10.4 million at Gooding Pebble Beach 2016 – the only Bugatti ever sold for over $10 million at public auction.

1952 Jaguar C-Type Sports Racing Two Seater

A 1952 Jaguar C-Type Sports Racing Two Seater, estimate $6,500,000 – 7,500,000, is the second-most-expensive car on offer at the Bonhams Amelia Island 2020 sale. This car was originally delivered in the USA to Commander John “Jack” Rutherford of Florida, who raced it at Daytona Beach.

Jaguar D-Types have struggled at recent auctions but the C-Type is far more rare. Few have sold at public auction in recent years with only the 1953 Jaguar C-Type Works Lightweight sold for $13,200,000 at RM Sotheby’s at Monterey 2015 exceeding the lower estimate of the car on offer.

Top Veteran and Brass Era Cars at Bonhams Amelia Island 2020

A large number of pre-First World War cars will be on offer at the Bonhams Amelia Island 2020 classic car auction. The leading car here is the 1907 Renault Type AI 35/45HP Vanderbilt Racer with coachwork by Renault Frères. It was commissioned by Willie K Vanderbilt for American racing and one of four survivors in the USA. It is in a highly original condition and at Pebble Beach 2016 won the Pre-War Racing class, The Phil Hill Trophy and the Revs institute award.

From the same year is the 1907 American Underslung 50hp Roadster, considered the oldest existing sportscar in America. At least two American Underslungs have sold in recent years for near the top estimate for this car.

The sale will also include two early Benz cars: the c.1897 Benz 10hp Mylord-Coupe, estimate US$ 500,000 – 750,000, and a 1911 Benz 50hp Victoria with coachwork by Demarest, estimate US$ 400,000 – 500,000.

1967 Ferrari 330 GTS

The 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, estimate $ 1,800,000 – 2,200,000, is somewhat surprisingly the only million-dollar Ferrari on offer at the Bonhams Amelia Island 2020 sale. It is also the newest car on offer with a preview estimate exceeding a million dollar.

The Ferrari 330 GTS was the 28th of only 100 produced and is offered with 50,952 miles on the clock. Two 330 GTS cars were sold at Scottsdale 2020 for within the estimate for this car.

However, the rarer and more interesting car is the 1934 Mercedes-Benz 500K Four-Passenger Tourer with coachwork by Mayfair. It is one of only eight 500K chassis sent to the UK and believed to be the only one fitted with Mayfair coachwork.

The extremely rare 1961 Aston Martin DB4 Series 4 GT is one of only seven surviving factory-specified left-hand-drive examples with special series GT engine. It is offered by the Estate of Dean S Edmonds Jr.
