1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe — Most Expensive American Car

The 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, chassis CSX2300, sold for $42,905,000 as the most expensive car at the Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach 2026 classic car auction. It had a more modest pre-sale estimate of “In Excess of $25,000,000”.
The stunning result made the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, chassis CSX2300,
- the most expensive American car ever,
- the most expensive Shelby ever,
- the most expensive car ever sold at Pebble Beach, and
- the most expensive car ever sold by Gooding Christie’s.
The previous marque record was $13,750,000 for the 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra CSX 2000, and the American record was $22 million for a 1935 Duesenberg SSJ.
CSX2300 was the third of only six Cobra Daytona Coupes created by Carroll Shelby, with a lightweight aluminium Carrozzeria Gransport coupe body designed by Peter Brock.
It was also a key participant in Shelby American’s historic 1965 FIA GT championship season, in which Shelby defeated Ferrari. CSX2300 raced at Daytona (3rd in class / 6th overall) and Sebring (3rd in class) before joining the European campaign led by Alan Mann Racing. It was the only Cobra Daytona Coupe to continue its international competition career beyond Shelby American’s factory program, racing successfully in Japan through 1968.
Carroll Shelby owned this Daytona Coupe from 1975 to 1988, during which period it was restored to its 1964 specifications.
Most Expensive Ferraris at Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach 2026

Three competition Ferraris were among the most expensive cars sold in the Pebble Beach 2026 auction.
1963 Ferrari 250 P
The 1963 Ferrari 250 P sold for a strong $18,705,000 as the second most expensive car at the Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach 2026 sale (Estimate: $15,000,000 – $20,000,000).
As Ferrari’s first-ever “P” car, chassis 0810 was Ferrari’s original mid-engine V-12 sports-racing prototype. Its success solidified the marque’s destiny in international endurance racing and defined its flagship 12-cylinder road and racing cars for decades.
As an official Scuderia Ferrari entry, 0810 finished 2nd Overall at the 12 Hours of Sebring with Willy Mairesse, Lorenzo Bandini, and Nino Vaccarella, and 3rd Overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Mike Parkes and Umberto Maglioli.
In 1964 and 1965, it was campaigned by Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team (N.A.R.T.) and William McKelvy’s Scuderia Bear, involving outings at Sebring, Le Mans, Bridgehampton, Mosport, Nassau, and other important American circuits.
1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione

The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione sold for $8,090,000 (pre-sale estimate: $8,000,000 – $10,000,000). Chassis 2701 GT was one of only 20 Comp/61 “SEFAC Hot Rod” Berlinettas built – the final and most uncompromising expression of the Ferrari 250 GT SWB model.
This 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione made its debut at the 1961 Le Mans Test weekend with Mike Parkes, Fernand Tavano, and Jo Schlesser, recording the fastest GT time of the meeting. 2701 GT’s period competition history also includes a run at the 1967 Targa Florio.
The result was relatively low for the model, but the Berlinetta had only limited racing history and is not a matching-numbers example.
1952 Ferrari 225 Sport ‘Tuboscocca’ Spider

The 1952 Ferrari 225 Sport ‘Tuboscocca’ Spider sold for $4,295,000 at Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach 2026 — well above the presale estimate of $2,000,000 to $3,000,000. This even-serial-number competition Ferrari, 0194 ET, is one of six 225 S Spiders built on the advanced “Tuboscocca” chassis, with elegant Michelotti-designed Vignale coachwork.
As a Scuderia Ferrari entrant, it participated in the 1952 1000 Miglia with Piero Scotti and Giulio Cantini, and was raced by Tom Cole at the Targa Florio and the Goodwood Nine Hours in distinctive dark blue-and-white livery. This 225 Sport was also driven in the 1953 1000 Miglia by racing legends Jacques Swaters and Charles de Tornaco. 0194 ET retains its matching-numbers engine and is documented by historian Marcel Massini, author of Ferrari by Vignale.

1959 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage

The 1959 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage, chassis 2452, sold for a strong $4,240,000. It was the first production Tipo 61 Birdcage and is one of just 17 examples built. Successfully campaigned in West Coast events from 1959 through 1963, it was raced by Bob Drake, Jim Connor, Jim Hall, Bill Krause, and Ken Miles.
1968 Porsche 907 Langheck — First Porsche 24-Hour Race Winner

The most expensive Porsche in the Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach 2026 sale, the 1968 Porsche 907 Langheck sold for a disappointing $3,305,000 (pre-sale estimate: $4,500,000 – $5,500,000).
Chassis 907-005 made history as the first Porsche to win a 24-hour race outright when it anchored a remarkable 1-2-3 finish for the Stuttgart marque at the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona. This monumental milestone established the foundation for the most successful endurance racing dynasty in motorsport history. It also finished 2nd overall at the 1968 Monza 1000 Km.
