A 1950 Gordini Type 18S raced by Juan Manuel Fangio at Le Mans sold for a marque-record $1,121,400.

The top result at the Artcurial Paris Rétromobile 2022 sale was €4,390,400 paid for a 1968 Porsche 907, chassis 907-031, estimate €4,000,000 to €6,000,000. At $4,860,000, this was the highest Porsche result thus far in 2022. The restored car was sold by the vendor who owned the Porsche for the last four decades.

This Porsche 907 was raced to 4th place overall as a Porsche factory works entry at the 1968 Nürburgring 1000 km race. As a private entry, it participated three times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1970 and 1972. It finished 1st in class and 7th overall in the 1971 race driven by Mattli and Brun. It had several further first in class finishes and even overall victories in lesser races.

The 1950 Gordini Type 18S, chassis 020S, estimate €800,000 – €1,600,000, set a marque record when it sold for $1,121,400. This Gordini was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and José Froilán González in the 1950 Le Mans 24 Hours (and retired after 95 laps with engine problems).

Only two examples of the Gordini Type 18S were ever built with a highly aerodynamic body made entirely of duralumin. Of the 33 different chassis built by Gordini, this #20S berlinetta is the only one to survive in such exceptionally original condition. It has retained the 1950 upholstery from Fangio’s era and is equipped with the only Gordini compressor engine still in existence. This Gordini berlinetta still bears the evidence of its history in competition, as raced by Juan-Manuel Fangio and also its participation in the Rome-Liège-Rome race in 1951.

Arguably the more exciting Juan Manel Fangio car is his personal 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster that RM Sotheby’s is currently selling in a sealed-bid auction — unfortunately, the price will not be released.

Although the Porsche 907 was the top result at the Artcurial Paris Rétromobile 2022 classic car auction, the Ferrari supercar results were absolutely spectacular. All these Ferraris were from the collection of a lawyer in Monaco who owned all from new.

The 1996 Ferrari F50 with only 1,318 km on the clock sold for a new model world-record $4,606,000 — the first time an F50 achieved over $4 million. The previous F50 model record was $3,965,000 paid at RM Sotheby’s Monterey 2021 while RM Sotheby’s achieved $3,875,500 on another one at Paris 2022 during the more regular early February Rétromobile schedule.

The 2003 Ferrari Enzo with 4,760 km on the clock sold for a strong $3,150,000. The three Enzos sold in 2021 all failed to reach $3 million but this was the second Enzo this year to breach that mark.

The 952-km 2013 Ferrari LaFerrari achieved $3,004,000 — although near top estimate, it was only slightly more than the LaFerrari with troublesome ownership history that Bonhams sold for €2,560,000 at Paris 2022 while RM Sotheby’s achieved a strong $3,662,500 at Amelia Island 2022.

The 1989 Ferrari F40 with 13,284 km on the clock achieved $2,102,400 — well above the fairly unambitious target. Although lower than Kissimmee and Amelia Island results earlier in 2022, it still reflects the sharp increase in F40 prices over the past year. In 2021, three of the seven F40s sold at major auctions were priced well below two million, and in 2020 the four F40s sold ranged in prices from $1.6 to only $1.1 million.
