1930s Classics at the Amelia Island 2022 Auctions
The most expensive car by far on offer at the Amelia Island 2022 classic car auctions is a magnificent 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe (Estimate: In excess of $10,000,000) on offer at the Gooding sale. Only around ten coupes with aerodynamic Goutte d’Eau coachwork by Figoni et Falaschi were ever produced with the car on offer the sole survivor of only two ever made with fully enveloping, skirted front fenders. The Talbot-Lago marque record is $7,150,000 achieved by a 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C SS Teardrop Cabriolet by Figoni et Falaschi at the RM Auctions Art of the Automobile Sale in 2013.
From the same era, but American and far from the sweeping lines of the French automobile is a 1934 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Convertible Victoria by Dietrich (Estimate: $3,750,000 – $4,500,000) — the most expensive car on offer at RM Sotheby’s. This First in Class and runner-up to Best of Show at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is one of only three known survivors. It could challenge the Packard marque record of $4,180,00 paid for a 1934 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Stationary Coupe by Dietrich at the RM Sotheby’s Andrews sale in 2015.
For the smaller budget, Gooding is offering another interesting Packard pair: a 1932 Packard Model 904 Deluxe Eight Individual Custom Stationary Coupe (Estimate: $1,800,000 – $2,400,000) and a 1932 Packard Model 904 Deluxe Eight Individual Custom Victoria (Estimate: $1,000,000 – $1,300,000).
Duesenbergs performed strongly at recent auctions: 10 sold for over a million in the past 18 months including six for over $3 million. The 1930 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Sedan by Murphy (Estimate $2,000,000 – $2,400,000) at RM Sotheby’s was awarded Best of Class in the Duesenberg Class at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. A 1929 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Victoria is available at Bonhams.
All three auction houses have a Bugatti Type 57 on offer but only the 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Stelvio Cabriolet at Bonhams is likely to achieve a million dollar.
Top Porsches on Sale at Amelia Island 2022
Porsches traditionally perform well at the annual Amelia Island classic car auction in Florida in early March. Gooding alone has ten million-dollar Porsches on offer but the most expensive Porsche at all the Amelia Island 2022 sales is a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder, estimate $4,500,000 – $ 5,500,000, at Bonhams. This 550 was extensively raced in period in Germany before being imported to the USA by a returning serviceman. It raced in SSCA and other races in North America until the mid-1960s.
All the other top racing Porsches are on offer at Gooding: the 1959 Porsche 718 RSK was raced in SCCA and other events in North America while the 1965 Porsche 904/6 was a works racer in European events before being raced privately in SCCA events.
The Gooding sale further includes two 1979 Porsche 935s — one raced at Le Mans in 1979 by Interscope racing and the second raced by Otis Chandler’s Vintage Racing team — and a 1977 Porsche 934/5 and a 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR IROC.
Of the road-going Porsches, the most anticipated result is probably for the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT (Estimate: $1,800,000 – $2,400,000). A year ago, a result half the lower estimate would have been considered very good. However, the model record was increased twice at Scottsdale 2022: RM Sotheby’s sold one for $1,545,000, and a few days later the model record was set at $1,980,000 at Barrett-Jackson. Remarkably, Gooding announced the whopping estimates before the Scottsdale results were known.
Modern Hypercars and Supercars at Amelia Island 2022
Almost a third of cars sold for over a million dollar thus far in 2022 at public auction was less than a decade old. Except for a 2019 Ford GT at Goodings, this section of the market was left entirely for RM Sotheby’s at Amelia Island 2022. The three modern hypercars on sale are a 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari, 2020 McLaren Speedtail, and a no-reserve 2019 Bugatti Chiron Sport — all three are likely to achieve results above $3 million.
The list of other top modern supercars on offer at Amelia Island 2022 is surprisingly short. Other than the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, RM Sotheby’s has a 1994 Bugatti EB110 GT Prototype — the EB110s sold very well recently — and Gooding a 1991 Ferrari F40.
Other Cars to Watch at Amelia Island 2022 Auctions
A few further results will be keenly watched. The 1967 Toyota-Shelby 2000 GT, chassis MF10-10001, estimate: $2,750,000 – $3,500,000, on offer at the Gooding Amelia Island 2022, is likely to become the most expensive Toyota and the priciest Japanese car ever sold in a public auction. It was the first Toyota 2000 GT produced and used as a promotion car in the USA before Carroll Shelby prepared and race it as the first Toyota participating in SSCA events.
Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs have sold for very strong prices thus far in 2022 — 7 for above a million. The model-record $6,825,000 paid for the extremely rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy Gullwing at RM Sotheby’s Arizona 2022 was for a very special car but a not particularly special Gullwing sold for $2,640,000 at Mecum Kissimmee 2022 while a 1964 Roadster achieved $2,315,000 at RM Sotheby’s Arizona — the fourth-highest price ever paid for a Roadster at auction. At Amelia Island 2022, Gooding is offering a Gullwing, Bonhams a Roadster, and RM one of each. The yellow 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster at Bonhams is the best 300 on offer but owners will watch all results with interest.
Ferraris will again play a rather small role in the auctions. Only six are likely to achieve a million-dollar and although all six are fine cars, none come with a special history, provenance, or exceptional features.
