The most expensive car sold at the Gooding and all Amelia Island 2022 auctions was $13,425,000 paid for the elegant 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe to set a new marque record and also become the most expensive French car ever sold at public auction. The 1967 Toyota Shelby 2000 GT sold for $2,535,000 as the most expensive Toyota and most expensive Japanese car ever. Further model records were set for a Porsche Carrera GT, Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback, and a RUF Turbo R Limited (also a marque record).

Million-Dollar Results at the Gooding Amelia Island 2022 Auction
1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe — Most Expensive French Car Ever
A 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop “Goutte d’Eau” Coupe sold for $13,425,000 as the most expensive car in the Gooding Amelia Island 2022 classic car auction, the priciest car at all Amelia Island 2022 sales, and the most expensive car sold in 2022 thus far. The car set the new Talbot-Lago marque record and is also the most expensive French car ever sold at public auction (in nominal terms). It is the 55th car to achieve over $10 million at public auction but only the second to so at Amelia Island (record $17,160,000 paid for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider at Gooding 2016) and was the 35th most expensive car ever sold at auction (in nominal terms).
Between 1937 and 1939, Talbot-Lago produced an extremely limited number ofT150-C-SS chassis, which were bodied by a variety of coachbuilders. The most spectacular examples were the around ten cars bodied by Figoni et Falaschi as teardrop coupes. Of these, only two received all-aluminum coachwork with fully enveloping, skirted front fenders. The record car on chassis 90107 is the only surviving example still having its original coachwork. The sister car set the previous Talbot-Lago marque record when it sold for $7,150,000 at an RM Auctions sale in New York in 2013.
In nominal terms, the 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe is also the most expensive French car ever sold at public auction. It joins three Bugattis as the only French cars to have achieved over $10 million in a public sale — all sold in Gooding auctions. The previous French record was $12,681,550 paid for a 1934 Bugatti type 59 Sports at Gooding London 2020.
A further 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C SS Teardrop Coupe from the Oscar Davis collection is likely to be on offer at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey 2022 sale — provisional estimate $8,000,000 – $10,000,000.
1967 Toyota Shelby 2000 GT — Most Expensive Japanese Car Ever
The 1967 Toyota-Shelby 2000 GT, chassis MF10-10001, achieved $2,535,000, as the most expensive Toyota and most expensive Japanese car ever sold at public auction. It was the first Toyota 2000 GT produced and used as a promotion car in the USA before Carroll Shelby prepared and race it as the first Toyota participating in SSCA events. It came from single ownership since 1980 and was never previously sold in a public auction.
Despite selling below the estimate of $2,750,000 to $3,500,000, it increased the Japanese, Toyota, and 2000 GT model records by some margin. Previously:
- the two most expensive Japanese cars ever sold at auction were two VIN001 first production models sold for charity at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auctions: the 2020 Toyota Supra GR for $2,100,000 in 2019 and the 2021 Lexus LC 500 Convertible Inspiration Series for $2,000,000 in 2020;
- the most expensive used Japanese car ever was the rotary engine 1989 Mazda 767B racing car sold for a post-hammer deal at $1,750,000 at Gooding Amelia Island 2017; and
- the most expensive Toyota 2000 GT ever was shared by two 1967 cars that sold for $1,155,000 each at RM Auctions in 2013 and Gooding in 2014.
Top Porsche Results at Gooding Amelia Island 2022 Sale
Although the most expensive Porsche result at Amelia Island 2022 was the $4,185,000 paid for a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder at Bonhams, Gooding sold the largest number of Porsches including seven for over a million dollar and several model records.
The 1959 Porsche 718 RSK sold for a mid-estimate $2,975,000 — this Porsche had a successful in-period racing history and was sold from 50 years of single-family ownership. The 1965 Porsche 904/6 similarly had in-period racing history but failed to reach the lower estimate.
The 2005 Porsche Carrera GT continued its run of success at recent auctions (including online auctions and private sales) when it achieved $2,012,500 — the third time this year that the model record at public auction increased. A year ago, a million-dollar result would have been considered very good. However, the model record was increased twice at Scottsdale 2022: RM Sotheby’s sold one for $1,545,000, and a few days later a new model record was set at $1,980,000 at Barrett-Jackson. A Carrera GT is on offer at Mecum Glendale, Arizona, in mid-March 2022 while RM Sotheby’s has one on offer in a private sale.
The Porsche 911 and racing derivatives mostly sold in or near estimate. The notable exception was the 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR IROC that sold for well above the upper estimate.
Further Top Results at Gooding Amelia Island 2022 Sale
A few further interesting results at the Gooding Amelia Island 2022 classic car auction included:
- 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback — sold for a new model record well above estimate
- 1998 RUF Turbo R Limited — sold well above estimate for a new marque record that may well lift prices for more cars from the Porsche modification specialist.
- 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing — achieved well above estimate to counterbalance expectations after the 300 SL Roadster failed to sell at Bonhams (despite a higher bid).
- 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Split-Window Coupe — sold well above estimate and one of the highest Corvette results ever.
- The Ferrari results were largely within expectations with no particularly notable cars on offer and similarly no special results. The 1991 Ferrari F40 had a solid result to confirm the strong prices for the F40s at recent auctions.
Top Cars Not Sold at Gooding Amelia Island Sale 2022
Gooding had a very high sell-through rate at Amelia Island 2022 with only four of the top cars failing to sell during the auction:
Year | Car | Highest Bid $ | Estimate $ |
1932 | Packard 904 Delux Eight Individual Custom Stationary Coupe | HB 1,600,000 | 1,800,000 – 2,400,000 |
1932 | Packard 904 Delux Eight Individual Custom Convertible Victoria | HB 725,000 | 1,000,000 – 1,300,000 |
1954 | OSCA MT4 2-AD 1500 Spider | HB 975,000 | 1,100,000 – 1,400,000 |
1951 | Ferrari 195 Inter Coupe | HB 640,000 | 900,000 – 1,200,000 |
Both the 1932 Packard 904 Delux Eight Individual Customs failed to sell with bidding stopping somewhat short of the lower estimate. It seems difficult to sell large classic 1930s American cars at these prices if not a Duesenberg.
NOTE: The 1932 Packard 904 Delux Eight Individual Custom Stationary Coupe sold after the auction for a reported $1.9 million.
Bidding for the OSCA stopped just short of a million while the interest in the Ferrari 195 Inter was limited (to put it politely).
